The first remedy is to always dry clean your records with a carbon fiber brush every time you put a record on your turntable to play it. Records can suffer from all sorts of deterioration much of it causing unwanted skipping or audio distortion. Your best friend when confronted with a skip on a record is a wooden tooth pick. After one side is clean flip it over and do the other.

Dirty records can skip. Pour the distilled de ionized water from the measuring cup onto the scratch. Put the lp record in the sink and run cold water over the lp record. Allow the soapy water to drain from the sink.

Rinse out the measuring cup with tap water. By using a magnifying glass you can examine the vinyl and find where the problem is. Some of these problems can be remedied while others are permanent. Allow the record to dry completely before you attempt to play it.
